Tirso Lighting was engaged in the pre-construction phase of Hoi Polloi, a new beer hall located within the recently opened Tangram Mall in Flushing, New York. Our task was to refine and execute a lighting concept envisioned by the client, integrating our expertise with the creative direction of interior designer Karen Lim.
3D Renderings Outline
Using advanced 3D modeling, we crafted the lighting design for the Hoi Polloi project. We created a digital 3D model of the raw space to explore different lighting ideas visually. Working closely with the client and the designer, these 3D images ensured everyone understood and agreed on the design.
Behind the Scenes
The Tirso Lighting team conducted in-depth consultations and meticulous measurements on location to tailor our lighting solutions to the unique contours and dimensions of the space. This hands-on approach ensured that our designs were not only aesthetically pleasing but also perfectly aligned with the structural and functional requirements of the venue. Further, our commitment to excellence continued through to the programming phase, where we fine-tuned the interplay of light and control systems to bring our collaborative vision to life, ensuring a seamless execution from concept to reality.
3D PROCESS
Our 3D process in lighting design involved creating virtual models of the space and simulating the lighting effects before actual installation. This allowed our team and the client to visualize and fine-tune the design accurately and efficiently, ensuring alignment with project goals and minimizing costs and labor associated with physical installation.
Custom Ring Lights Design
The custom ring lights for Hoi Polloi were engineered to be more than just light sources; they were envisioned as sculptural elements that complement the venue’s dynamic atmosphere. Each ring, measuring 48 inches in diameter, was meticulously crafted with an array of LEDs to provide a full spectrum of color and intensity control. Designed to be dimmable and with the ability to create a multitude of effects, these ring lights were not only functional but also a central feature of the venue’s identity, exuding a modern yet inviting glow that animates the space with a soft, diffused luminance.
Solutions
Conventional Lighting: We designed and selected recessed, track, and LED linear lighting for both interior and exterior applications, ensuring consistent and efficient illumination throughout the venue.
Color Changing Fixtures: We partnered with Acolyte for linear wash lights, which were demonstrated to be ideal for the designated areas. Additionally, we custom-designed OCL 16-inch pendants and large color-changing ball pendants.
Custom Fixtures and Installation: We designed two types of glass sphere diffusers (6 inches and 8 inches in diameter) with RGBW LED lighting sources, easily serviceable due to their detachable connectors. These spheres were installed at various heights to avoid collisions and create a visually engaging layout.
Advanced Control Systems: Utilizing Madrix software, we engineered a control system that allowed for precise manipulation of lighting effects across 360 individual LEDs per fixture in the larger pipe grid, enhancing the dynamic atmosphere of the venue.
The Outcome
The lighting installation at Hoi Polloi not only met the functional requirements of a bustling beer hall but also enhanced its architectural features and ambiance, contributing to a vibrant and welcoming environment. The strategic placement and design of the lighting fixtures have made the venue a standout attraction in Tangram Mall, significantly aiding in attracting foot traffic from the adjacent food court.
